St Elvan Aberdare

Dominating the town centre, St Elvan’s has been described as “the Cathedral of the Valleys”. Built in 1852 it is steeped in the Anglo-Catholic tradition with a Sung Mass at 11am on Sundays and mid-week masses on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays. In recent years St Elvan’s has undergone a £2m renovation funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund. This has resulted in the St Elvan’s Heritage Project, in which the church is opened up for a variety of concerts, exhibitions, talks and workshops. A coffee shop now runs daily inside the church.

St Luke Cwmdare

St. Luke’s Church was opened in 1887 in the then mining village of Cwmdare. Previously people met in houses to share their faith and commitment, raising money to build their own church on land endowed by the Holford estate. In the 1950’s a church hall was built which has been a great asset to fellowship. Twice weekly Eucharists are well attended by a welcoming congregation at 11am on Sundays, in which our Sunday school children participate, and at 10am on a Thursday which is preceded by morning prayer.

St Winifred Penywaun

A dual-purpose building built in 1958, St Winifred’s is the only place of worship on the large housing estate of Penywaun, which comprises both housing association and privately owned properties. The hall is well used by the local community. Prior to the mid-week service on a Tuesday, the church is open during the winter as a warm hub, and year round we provide women's sanitary products free of charge.
